Mid-Maine Global Forum – How Countries Compete (July 23)

The Role Of Government In National Development Strategies During The Global Economic Crisis

Dear Friend of the Mid-Maine Global Forum,

Please join us for dinner as we culminate another year of bringing high-caliber speakers on global topics to central Maine. We are honored to have as our speaker the distinguished Richard Vietor, the Senator John Heinz Professor of Environmental Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and Senior Associate for the Asian Initiative. Dr. Vietor teaches courses on the international political economy and is highly regarded as a speaker on the global economic crisis. He will discuss how countries compete, especially the U.S., China, Japan, and India.

Date: Thursday, July 23, 2009

Place: Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center, Colby College

Time: Beer and Wine Reception at 6:15;
Dinner at 7:00, followed by Keynote Address

Biography

Professor Vietor is the author of numerous books and papers. He received a B.A. in economics from Union College (1967), an M.A. in history from Hofstra University (1971), and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Pittsburgh (1975).

His most recently published books include:

  • How Countries Compete: Strategy, Structure, and Government in the Global Economy. Boston: Harvard Business School Press, 2007.
  • Environmental Protection and the Social Responsibility of Firms. Washington, D.C.: Resources for the Future Press, 2005. Edited with Bruce L. Hay, and Robert Stavins.
  • Vietor, R. H.K., and R. E. Kennedy. Globalization and Growth: Cases in National Economic Strategies. Fort Worth: Dryden Press, 2000.
