About the Speaker

Robert Rotberg is Professor and Director of the Program on Intrastate Conflict at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and President of the World Peace Foundation. He is the author of numerous articles about Zimbabwe and of Ending Autocracy, Enabling Democracy: The Tribulations of Southern Africa (2002). His most recent book is China into Africa: Aid, Trade, and Influence (2008). Dr. Rotberg has known Syl Whitaker for at least 40 years. We are honored to host such a distinguished expert as our speaker today.

The Mid-Maine Global Forum dedicates this program to the memory of C. Sylvester Whitaker, Jr., who passed away this winter after a battle with cancer. Syl had a distinguished career as a scholar, teacher, and administrator, and was the first African American male to graduate from Swarthmore College (in 1956) and the first African American to earn a PhD in Political Science from Princeton University (in 1962). His work on the emirates of northern Nigeria set the standard for scholarship in Nigeria, and remains essential reading for those who study political development, political change and issues of democratization. We were privileged to have Syl on the board of directors of the MMGF and we miss him.

For more information on the Mid-Maine Global Forum please see our web site.

On July 23, we will hold our Annual Dinner Meeting, featuring Harvard Professor Richard Vietor on the Global Economic Crisis. Mark your calendars and look for more details.
