A Letter to Our Readers

June 27, 2000

Dear Reader,

Welcome to Local Voices, Mid-Maine's emerging community newspaper! This public forum is published by REM as a service to all residents and organizations in Mid-Maine with the aim of celebrating and improving the quality of life in this region.

By the Fourth of July, 2000, we expect to start posting articles by volunteer writers on a wide range of topics--downtown revitalization, favorite restaurants, riverfront planning, business updates, pet care, arts and heritage updates, cartoons, the quality of education, opinion pieces, community-building, summer events, and much more. Our first step is to start posting this material on this web site. When we reach critical mass in a few weeks, we'll pull together a quarterly print version, too, for Summer 2000.

This publication is about as grassroots as you can get, and will grow with community support in the form of volunteer writers, editors, and graphic designers, as well as advertisers. Our plan is to become a self-sustaining weekly within three years. It could happen sooner with your support.

Because this is your newspaper, your voice is welcome. You do not need to be a member of REM to write for Local Voices. Content focuses on this region and the concerns and interests of its people. Seasoned journalists and first-time writers of all ages and backgrounds are already starting to contribute. We would love to hear from you.
