Art is an expression of a community talking to itself. Whether it be through architecture, painting, writing, the theatre, dance, film, music, or finely executed crafts, it speaks. And the museums, galleries, libraries, performing arts centers, art education programs, and cultural organizations that support it provide a platform and a haven for such "speaking."
What is it the arts and our cultural heritage say? In today's highly charged, chaotic world they often tell us where we've been, and point to new horizons. Their importance, in fact, can't be minimized. Not only do they foster outlets for self and community expression, but they train for future accomplishment. Beyond the fact of creativity, pursuing any of the arts demands organization, concentration, sincere dedication, and a reaching for excellence. They teach patience, humbleness, and responsibility, as well as the immense joy of sharing.
One might say that the health and vitality of any community depends upon the rich and varied cultural life that supports, expresses, and promotes it. The arts bring grace to life.
